Legendary DJ Danny Rampling rolled up on Point Blank yesterday to deliver not one but TWO FREE masterclasses, both of which went down a storm and were thoroughly inspiring! Danny focused on talking about how to succeed in the music industry to celebrate the launch of his great new book titled ‘Everything you Need to Know About DJing and Success’ . To make sure everybody had a chance to learn from Danny’s session we streamed the lectures through our Livestream channel so there was no excuse of missing out, even if you cannot make it to the studios. If by some chance, you did happen to miss the session being aired live, or you wish to view the masterclass again; you can replay the recorded version again, by visiting our Livestream channel , or watch the highlights in the player above. The masterclass was a great way to pick up some tips from an artist who has seen it all whilst being able to check out the Point Blank studios if you haven’t yet been. We try to make these masterclasses as regular as possible (at least once a term), so look out for more from big names in the near future! This was the first masterclass we have ever streamed through our Livestream channel. And it was a huge success, sharing knowledge to the furthest flung corners of the globe! Head to: livestream.com/pointblankonline to catch the action. Lastly a very big thank you to Danny for taking the time to come in and answer the multitude of questions fired at him and hopefully inspiring a new generation of top DJs!

Claude VonStroke's Manager Talks About The Music Business Course

After completing the Online Music Business course , we spoke with Dirtybird's Label Manager, Luke Williams, to find out about his Point Blank experience and his thoughts about the course. PB: What were your overall impressions of the course? LW: I took the Music Business Course and found it very well put together. The class is comprised of lessons that are well thought out and easy to digest. Topics that can be incredibly complicated and confusing were explained in a way that made sense. PB: What course materials were offered to you as an online student? LW: There were links to videos, images, and instructional videos as well that made visual sense of the text as well as providing additional information. PB: How did you communicate with your tutor and fellow students? Who was your tutor, and how would you rate him? LW: I enjoyed meeting with fellow classmates and the instructor in the chat room to discuss the topics in the lessons and homework. I had Steve Hillier as and instructor, who has been in the music industry for 20+ years. If I had to give him a grade, it'd be an A+, because he responded to my homework with a video review and covered all aspects of what I had done with great feedback. PB: Which subject areas were of particular interest or most useful to you? LW: For me the most important subject area was royalties because I'm doing them as we speak, and the world of royalties can be very frustrating and cryptic. PB: Did you meet anyone interesting whilst on the course? LW: All the other students in my class were interesting and engaged, as well as Mr.Hillier, who really set a great tone for the class. PB: Do you think you will you be able to apply this knowledge to practial use, in managing Dirtybird Records? LW: All of the information that was taught will help me, because it all applies to the every day work I do in some fashion. PB: Are there any other comments you have about the course? LW: I was skeptical if this course would be beneficial to me or not, I wondered if the layout of the class online would be easy to get through or if it would just be frustrating. I was pleased to see that not only was it beneficial, but it was also very well laid out, and I looked forward to doing it. I can't wait for more classes of this nature in the future! Thanks to Luke for taking the time to answer our questions. Find out more about the Music Business Course here , and read more student reviews here .

Take a listen for yourself below: It will be featured on the Lot49 Anniversary Compilation and will be released in the single package along with the two runners up March 2011! Congratulations to him, we are always proud to hear about our students making waves in the music industry. This is what Dirt Revolver had to say about how Point Blank has contributed to his production career so far. "Point Blank sorted me out! The online courses are amazing and I cannot recommend them enough. You simply cannot get this level of industry relevant teaching anywhere else. I learned so much from both online courses in terms of the correct choice of sounds, MIDI programming, genre relevant production tips & inside industry knowledge and advice.
Claude Vonstroke Studies at Point Blank

Recently we were very honoured to have a certain Barclay Crenshaw take an online course at Point Blank. For those of you thinking who??...well, when the sun goes down and the bass goes up Barclay prefers to go by the name… Claude Vonstroke! That’s right, the head honcho of two of electronic music’s most celebrated labels, Dirtybird and Mothership, as well as the production talent behind a raft of critically acclaimed releases including ‘Who’s Afraid of Detroit’ – one of the biggest underground club hits of the last decade. The fact that a man with such credentials was seeking out further training just goes to show that one of the keys to success in the music industry is to acknowledge that there is always more to learn and to have a thirst to attain that knowledge. We are proud that he considered Point Blank the best place to do so… Maybe he could teach us a trick or two in return!! This is what he had to say about his experience: “I took one of the Ableton classes to learn some new chops without having to read boring manuals. As compared to some other generic online training I was doing for Reason 5 the Point Blank DVR and webpage method was WAY better because we were talking about dance music the whole time and learning things we would actually use instead of just a list of software features. The class was fantastic, especially because it was geared towards modern music and teaching things we all want to know better like how to make bass sound good.” We can’t wait to check out his upcoming releases to hear how he puts his Point Blank training to use! We highly recommend you check out Claude Vonstroke’s latest album Bird Brain and the 5 Years of Dirtybird compilation .

Danny Rampling has been a stalwart of the UK dance music scene pretty much from day dot. Along with the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Nicky Holloway, he is credited as one of the group of DJs who brought the Balearic rave scene back to these shores from Ibiza in 1987. Since then his production and DJ career has gone from strength to strength having promoted his own seminal night ‘ Shoom ’ before going on to hold down long-running prime time slots on Kiss FM and Radio 1 , as well as remix many UK and international artists. So we were absolutely delighted to hear that Danny has endorsed Point Blank in his book, ‘Everything you Need to Know About DJing and Success’ . He said “Point Blank is one of the best-known and authoritative DJ and music production audio schools in the UK”. The book is not only a comprehensive guide to the technical aspects of DJing but also how to achieve success from a business and psychological perspective, whatever your chosen life path may be. It is an inspiring read and will undoubtedly give you the confidence and know-how to make that progression from bedroom DJ to professional. We highly recommend you pick up a copy available at almost half price here . Watch Danny talking about his book in the video below: We are also very excited to announce that Danny will be giving an live online music industry masterclass through our Livestream channel in early 2011 so keep your eyes peeled for more news on that.

Through our links with partner advertising agencies such as Blackbook, BMB, JSA and BBH our students receive regular opportunities to provide music for real clients and get paid for it! The latest example of this was online student Stellita Kolokythas who responded to the brief we sent out courtesy of The UK Jewish Film Festival. Her music was selected as the backing track for the official trailer for 2010 which was shown before each of the 60 films screened during the month long festival. Great exposure and royalties too!
